Overcaps for Cans
Customer Needs
The project was developed to meet the need for the automatic application of protective overcaps on different can formats, with a production capacity of 330bpm.
The overcap serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, it protects the top of the can, creating a physical barrier against dust, external contamination and handling during transportation, storage and distribution. On the other hand, it becomes a distinctive element of packaging customization, thanks to the possibility of using different shapes, colors and designs.
The challenge was therefore to automatically handle overcaps with different geometries, while ensuring application accuracy, packaging integrity and continuous operation at high speed.
The TorQ Packaging Solution
TorQ Packaging developed a rotary press-on capping machine, specifically configured for the automatic positioning and application of overcaps onto cans.
The system feeds and positions each overcap onto the corresponding can and completes the application through controlled pressure, ensuring stable and repeatable application at a speed of 330bpm.
One of the key features of the solution is its flexibility: the machine can handle different can formats and overcaps with different shapes and characteristics, allowing multiple packaging configurations to be managed on the same production platform.
Key Strengths
- 330bpm
- Rotary press-on capping
- Different can and overcap formats
- Handling of different geometries
- Accurate and repeatable application
- Protection of the top of the can
- Packaging customization
- Flexible format changeover
Results
The solution makes it possible to integrate a packaging element into the production line that goes beyond a purely aesthetic function.
The overcap provides additional protection for the top of the can, while at the same time offering new opportunities to customize the packaging and differentiate the product on the shelf.
With a capacity of 330bpm and the ability to handle different combinations of cans and overcaps, the TorQ solution combines speed, accuracy and flexibility in a non-conventional capping application.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates how capping technology can be customized to meet specific packaging requirements, transforming an element such as an overcap into a solution that combines protection, aesthetics and functionality.
The machine’s flexibility and high production speed make it possible to manage different configurations while maintaining accuracy and process continuity.
